PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
Martha Redbone is one of today’s most vital voices in American Roots music. A multi award-winning musician, the charismatic songstress is celebrated for her tasty gumbo of roots music embodying the folk and mountain blues sounds of her childhood in the Appalachian hills of Kentucky mixed with the eclectic grit of her teenage years in pre-gentrified Brooklyn. With her gospel-singing father’s voice and the spirit of her Cherokee/Choctaw mother’s culture, Redbone broadens the boundaries of Americana. Her latest CD, The Garden of Love- Songs of William Blake, produced by Nitty Gritty Dirt Band founder and Grammy® Winner John McEuen is an unexpected twist – “a brilliant collision of cultures” (New Yorker) features Martha’s magnificent voice, Blake’s immortal words and a masterful cornucopia of roots music (folk, country, Piedmont blues, gospel, bluegrass, soul and traditional Southeastern Native American). From humble beginnings with residencies at the original Living Room on the Lower East side and at Joe’s Pub, and nationally at powwows across Indian Country, Redbone has built a passionate fan base with her mesmerizing presence and explosive live shows. Her signature sound will feel right at home in Weisiger Theatre as she makes a return to Kentucky for her Norton Center debut.

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
The Westerlies are a New York-based brass quartet comprised of four childhood friends from Seattle, Washington: Riley Mulherkar and Zubin Hensler on trumpet, and Andy Clausen and Willem de Koch on trombone.

Formed in 2011, the self-described “accidental brass quartet” take their name from the prevailing winds from the West to the East. The Westerlies explore classical, jazz, and roots music influences to create the rarest of hybrids: music that is both, “folk-like and composerly, lovely and intellectually rigorous” (NPR Music). Equally at home in concert halls and living rooms, The Westerlies navigate a wide array of venues with the precision of a string quartet, the audacity of a rock band, and the charm of a family sing-along.

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
Oklahoma-born, Brooklyn-based, thirty-something, singer-songwriter and cellist, Gabriel Royal plays his ‘grown up lullabies’ in the subway stations of New York City. That’s where he found his lawyer, his manager, his cello and where he continues to find a genuine connection with his inspiration: the commuters of New York.

Influenced by Stevie Wonder’s groove and Burt Bacharach’s jazzy yet poppy sensitivities, along with other contemporary artists such as John Legend, Hiatus Coyote, Flying Lotus, James Blake, Janelle Monae and Thundercat, Gabriel’s trademark sound is all his own. Royal released his self-titled album in 2016 – along with his single and music video for “Say It’s Right,” directed by Blake Farber, who has worked with Beyoncé and other A-list artists. With his new-found popularity, Royal is now popping up at prestigious music festivals and performing art centers around the country.

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
Grammy®-nominated artists Alfredo Rodríguez and Pedrito Martinez first worked together on Alfredo’s 2012 release The Invasion Parade. Since that initial recording session they have had the rare occasion to perform together as a duo, leaving audiences completely mesmerized by their fearless and virtuosic playing.

Each artist brings a different approach to the collaboration. A protégé of Quincy Jones, who took him under his wing when he defected to the US in 2009, pianist Rodríguez was schooled in the rigorous classical conservatories of Havana. His riveting artistry is informed as much by Bach and Stravinsky as it is by his Afro Cuban and jazz roots. Percussionist and vocalist Martinez’s musical training came directly from the streets of the Cayo Hueso neighborhood of Old Havana in which he was raised and he has subsequently performed with artists such as Sting, Paul Simon, and Wynton Marsalis. Together, these two master musicians take listeners on a unique and exciting journey.

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
Singer-songwriter Carrie Newcomer invites listeners to “pause the perpetual motion” of their lives with her elegantly layered, engaging and often contemplative songs. Described as a “soaring songstress” by Billboard, Newcomer’s spiritually progressive music is grounded in earthy truths. Newcomer has been dubbed “A poet, storyteller, snake-charmer, good neighbor, friend and lover, minister of the wide-eyed gospel of hope and grace” by author Barbara Kingsolver, and was listed as one of “The 50 most influential folk musicians of the past 50 years” by Chicago’s WFMT.

Over the Rhine, comprised of husband-wife songwriters Linford Detweiler and Karin Bergquist, have been performing an honest yet hopeful brand of songwriting since forming in Cincinnati in 1989. Ethereal and earthy at once, their arrangements and lyrics are subtly satisfying. Paste Magazine has praised their music as “lovely, heartbreaking, and ultimately uplifting.” The duo has shared the stage with Bob Dylan, John Prine, Adrian Belew, Squeeze, Ani DiFranco, My Morning Jacket, Hem, and toured as “adjunct” members of Cowboy Junkies.
